Summer is the best season evva! |
Seventeen years ago, I planted my first letterbox. With my 10, 8, and 5 year-olds in tow, we made our way to the iconic Grays Harbor Light, and found a lovely little hiding spot for my feeble attempt at carving the lighthouse. Now, all these years later, my boxing-other-half and I retraced the original clue. Ever hopeful to find the original (which had been re-carved a couple of times), we searched in vain. No worries though, I was well-pleased to use the same clue and once again offer a gem for those who venture down to this small fishing village.
Oh, and if you come for it on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, you would do yourself a big favor to stop by Little Richard's Donuts. They simply are the best doughnuts I have ever had. That's right - in 56 years of living, I have never had a better doughnut than the maple bars at Little Richard's. Full stop. Oh, and they don't have a closing time - they close the doors when they sell out. You've been warned. :)
Replanting that first letterbox today was immensely satisfying. The sun was shining, the breeze was delicious, and everyone was smiling. Well, at least I imagined they were smiling behind their masked faces. Such as things go these days. But, the restaurants were busy, the boats were fun to look at, and it was a perfect day on the harbor (even without doughnuts). I am not sure it was sunny when the kids and I first planted the box, but I like to remember it that way in my mind.
When we returned home, I had happy mail. Two lovely boxers swapped pathtags with me - and I am so thrilled. What a cool thing to collect! The artwork. The stamps. The new friends! Now I have four counting my own ... does that count?
