The Group Shot
Another idea for portraits, one that I always try to start with, is just simple lines. The goal is to express the feeling of a portrait using a minimum of lines.
I tried this as an experiment with the tour group photo from my first visit to Israel a few years ago.

You know I love this one - I can picture us in such a photo in the future... :o)
I did something similar with my Waiting With Mr. Lincoln. Amazingly effective.
